Asbestos Safety

Home

Breathing in asbestos fibers is a cause of serious illnesses, which include malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma - which is a form of cancer strongly associated with exposure to amphibole asbestos, and asbestosis. Breathing in asbestos over a long period of time is very likely to cause health problems. The European Union banned all use of asbestos and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products.

Amosite and crocidolite are the most dangerous types of asbestos. People who are exposed to asbestos on a day-to-day basis probably in a job where they worked directly with the material are most likely to become ill from asbestos inhalation.

Before it was banned asbestos was used in the construction industry. A lot of older buildings built before the 1990s contain asbestos. Renovation and demolition of asbestos contaminated buildings is subject to EPA NESHAP and OSHA Regulations.
