Asbestos Removal
It is highly recommended that you hire a professional asbestos removal contractor if you need some asbestos removing. They will be able to remove and dispose of the asbestos safely.
If you do choose to remove the non licensed asbestos materials yourself it will be very wise for you to notice these following precautions on what steps to take :
wear a dust mask approved for asbestos;
wear a disposable overall
keep other people away from the working area;
wet the material well with water containing a little washing up liquid; check that there is no potential for contact with electricity first;
always remove whole sheets or components; do not break them up
place any loose or small items in strong plastic labelled bags and seal;
clean up all dust with a damp cloth and then seal it in a plastic bag whilst damp;
do not use a domestic vacuum cleaner as dust may pass through the filter.
If you have removed asbestos from your home yourself, it will need to be disposed of separately from your normal household waste. You might be able to have it arranged by your district council there may also be special facilities where you can drop off your removed asbestos. Contact your council for further details.
If you need to work with asbestos, make sure that you:
Use hand tools - not power tools
Keep materials damp - not too wet
Wear a properly fitted, suitable mask (eg. disposable FFP3 type). An ordinary dust mask will not be effective
Don't smoke, eat or drink in the work area
Double-bag asbestos waste and label the bags properly
Clean up as you go - use a special (Class H) vacuum cleaner, not a brush
After work, wipe down your overalls with a damp rag or wear disposable overalls (Type 5)
Always remove overalls before removing your mask
Don't take overalls home to wash
Wear boots without laces or disposable boot covers
Put disposable clothing items in asbestos waste bags and dispose of them properly
Don't carry asbestos into your car or home
