Handleing Asbestos
Handling Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral element which is exploited for commercial purposes. It is used in making many building materials for its mineral fiber content. The mineral fiber content makes it suitable for manufacturing insulation and fire retardant construction materials.
A wide variety of building materials such as floor and ceiling tiles, roofing shingles, cement products and even paper products have been made using asbestos. Friction products such as brakes, transmission and clutch for automobiles are also made using asbestos. Gaskets, packaging and coatings are among heat resistant fabric items made using asbestos.
However, asbestos is known to cause health problems. When asbestos containing materials are interfered with through demolition, remodeling, repair or other activities, microscopic fibers are made airborne. These can cause health problems when inhaled to the lungs.
Asbestos exposure is found in many places. These include;
Working places where industries use asbestos products or mine asbestos.
Repair of brakes and clutch can also cause asbestos exposure.
Material such as floor tiles, fire proof, acoustical materials and insulation materials containing asbestos.
People living near such industries and mines are also exposed to asbestos.
Construction industries and activities involving renovation and demolition of buildings may also cause asbestos exposure
However, there is no need to panic. Asbestos materials in good condition do not release microscopic fibers. In case you suspect that a material has asbestos, it is important to avoid touching it. Instead, ensure it is not damaged and keep checking for wear, tears, water damage or abrasions on it.
Therefore, it is important to avoid handling, rubbing or hitting such materials. It is also very crucial to ensure that such materials are not extremely exposed to airflow or vibration. Slightly damaged asbestos materials should be avoided by limiting access to areas where they are. Disturbing them should also be avoided and if they have to be repaired, it should be done by professionals.
Resources
Fume and dust extraction is highly important in industrial environments as chemicals and other hazardous substances can put employees’ health at risk. This could cause diseases such as asthma, dermatitis or even cancer.
